The Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid was diagnosed with appendicitis on Thursday in Houston and underwent surgery that same afternoon. The timing is too perfect to be worse, as the regular season ends Sunday, and the Play-In Tournament begins Tuesday.
Nick Nurse’s squad is currently 43–36, sitting in eighth place in the East. They have three games left and are chasing the Orlando Magic (seventh) and the Toronto Raptors (sixth). Finishing sixth guarantees a playoff spot, while seventh or lower means fighting through the Play-In rounds just to get in.

In this tough situation, Embiid's health issue put the team in serious trouble. He was notably frustrated after being ruled out of the April 1 game against the Washington Wizards due to illness and had just returned from a knee-related absence earlier in the year.
To make it worse, the 76ers released an official statement, penning, "Joel Embiid has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will undergo surgery this afternoon in Houston. Further updates will be provided as appropriate."
Though he underwent surgery immediately, it has raised significant eyebrows about his return. As PhillyVoice staff writer Adam Aaronson noted, previous NBA appendicitis cases point to a multi-week absence at minimum.
He explained, "Only three games remain in the regular season, which ends on Sunday. The Sixers could be playing a postseason game as soon as Tuesday depending on where they land in the Eastern Conference standings. A few recent examples of appendicitis diagnoses in the NBA suggest this will be, at the very least, a multi-week absence for Embiid."
OG Anunoby had faced a similar situation in April 2019. He reportedly underwent an emergency appendectomy just before the playoffs and was expected to miss at least two weeks. He ultimately missed the first three rounds of the Raptors' championship run, not returning until the NBA Finals.
The numbers don't help Embiid's case much. ESPN's Tony Jones added context on social media Thursday, noting that the average recovery from appendicitis is around two weeks. This timeline rules Embiid out of any play-in game and puts his first-round availability in serious doubt.
Injury analyst Jeff Stotts added more specific data, penning, “Joel Embiid Medical Update: Appendectomies are relatively uncommon in the NBA but have occurred with players like Grant Hill & OG Anunoby undergoing the procedure. The average time lost for in-season surgery is ~23 days (10.2 games). Median = 18 days.”
For the 76ers, the only viable path is to secure a top-six seed. This would bypass the play-in gauntlet and buy Embiid extra days to potentially return mid-series in Round one. If Philadelphia slips to the seventh seed or lower, they must win high-stakes play-in games without him just to qualify for the postseason.
With Embiid out, Andre Drummond and Adem Bona are the main options at center. But filling the void left by a player who averaged 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds will be a big challenge.
