Nneka Ogwumike bids farewell to the WNBA after playing the last game of her professional career in the Los Angeles Sparks’ season finale against the Golden State Valkyries.
The Sparks lost a close 76-75 game, but Ogwumike made it a memorable final performance by posting 17 points, 15 rebounds and five assists at Crypto.com Arena.
It marked the end of a legendary 15-year career for Ogwumike, which saw her win Rookie of the Year in 2012 and become a champion and league MVP in 2016. The star forward also bagged 11 All-Star selections, eight All-WNBA Team honors and seven All-Defensive Team nods.
Off the court, Ogwumike was named president of the WNBA Players Association in 2016 and led the way when the union chose to opt out of its Collective Bargaining Agreement. This year, the Sparks forward also played a leading role in negotiating the new CBA, which gave players transformative benefits to enjoy.
Ogwumike’s decision to retire has been met with a lot of positivity from fans and those within the league. Among those who shared their thoughts was her Sparks teammate Cameron Brink.

Following Ogwumike’s final career game, Brink took to social media to share her appreciation for the WNBA icon and send her a parting message.
“Thank you Nneka for making this season so incredibly special,” Brink wrote. “What a blessing it was to witness greatness every single day. I truly adore you and you’re never getting rid of me lol.”
Although it’s unfortunate that the Sparks missed the playoffs this season, Ogwumike’s influence on the franchise and the younger players she mentored will continue to be felt after her departure.
Ogwumike’s leadership and experience have set a standard for the next generation of stars in Los Angeles, Brink included.
