Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams defended his emotional reaction to a hamstring injury after facing criticism for leaving the field in tears.
Williams addressed the backlash Thursday, explaining that his frustration came from being unable to help his teammates. He was injured during Chicago’s Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 20 and has missed three games this season.
“I’m always going to show emotion, especially when I can’t be out there with the guys,” Williams told reporters. “I care about the team, the organization, winning, being out there, my teammates. All of that. I care, and that’s the biggest thing.”
Williams said his tears reflected how much playing means to him, not an inability to handle pressure.
Williams also disputed reports about the injury. He confirmed that he suffered a hamstring tear, describing it as “a pretty serious one,” and pushed back against accounts that called it a strain.
He declined to reveal the tear’s specific grade, saying previous reports had been inaccurate. Williams argued that details should come directly from him or head coach Ben Johnson.
The injury has sidelined Chicago’s starting quarterback for three games, but Williams has progressed in practice. He was a full participant Thursday, giving the Bears a chance to assess whether he can return Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Williams said he still needed to clear additional checkpoints before knowing whether he would play. His status remains a question as Chicago prepares for Atlanta.
He also expressed frustration with coverage of his recovery, saying inaccuracies had made him reluctant to share more medical information.
Williams offered no apology for showing emotion. He made clear that his tears came from wanting to compete and support his teammates, not from an inability to handle pressure.
