Caleb Durbin had a simple message for the Boston Red Sox after Roman Anthony’s latest injury concern.
Anthony left Tuesday’s 9-0 loss to the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series after his right hand became uncomfortable following a check swing. Manager Chad Tracy could not confirm whether Anthony would be available for Game 2.
Durbin acknowledged how important Anthony is to the Red Sox but pointed to the team’s ability to overcome adversity throughout the season.
“Roman’s a big part of this team. That goes without saying,” Durbin said, via Tim Healey. “At this point of the year, it’s next man up.”
The third baseman added that Boston has consistently had players step up when injuries have created opportunities, and he expects that to continue if Anthony cannot play.
Anthony’s situation is particularly concerning because the same right hand caused him to miss most of the regular season. He returned from the injured list in late August after being sidelined since May with a right wrist injury and a partial tear involving his ring finger.
The 22-year-old went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before leaving Tuesday’s game. Boston’s lineup managed only two hits against Yankees starter Cam Schlittler, who struck out 10 over 6⅓ scoreless innings.
Durbin also went hitless in Game 1, but his focus afterward was on keeping the clubhouse ready for another game.
The Red Sox now face elimination in Game 2, with Sonny Gray scheduled to start against Yankees left-hander Max Fried. If Anthony cannot go, Boston will need someone else to provide an offensive spark.
For Durbin, the approach remains straightforward. The Red Sox have dealt with adversity all season, and they will need another player to step forward if Anthony is unavailable.
