Connor McCaffery, a former Iowa basketball player and the boyfriend of Caitlin Clark, had important news to share with the public on Thursday night.
McCaffery, the son of former Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, played for the Hawkeyes from 2017-2023. He averaged 6.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during his final season of college basketball. After graduating from the university, he accepted an assistant coaching role with the Indiana Pacers.
“I’m really excited. I want to get away and try to learn from someone else, somewhere else,” McCaffery said. “I’ve always been under my dad’s shadow and tutelage. Now, learning from someone like coach (Rick) Carlisle … and the assistants they have there, they’re all good basketball minds … I’m just going to try to take everything in.”
McCaffery then left the Pacers to become an assistant coach for the Butler Bulldogs. He's been on Thad Matta's staff for the past two seasons.

On Thursday night, McCaffery shocked his fans by announcing that he's leaving Butler University behind.
"End of an era! Forever grateful to Coach Matta for the opportunity that he gave me," McCaffery wrote. "Learned a lot and worked with great people - excited for what’s next."
It's unclear what's next for McCaffery, but we'd have to imagine he's moving on in pursuit of another coaching job.
When did Caitlin and Connor start dating?
Clark and McCaffery “hard launched” their relationship in August 2023 with a heartfelt Instagram post. They've been pretty open about their romance since then.
“Happy 24th CC,” McCaffrey wrote on Instagram this past January. “Celebrating you is a privilege and I’m so grateful for the laughter and joy you bring to our everyday lives. 2026 has so much in store for you. I love you.”
With the WNBA season a month away from starting, it won't be long before McCaffery is cheering on Clark and the Indiana Fever.
