Caitlin Clark had an impressive performance in her FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup debut. She helped Team USA get the dominant 33-point win against China, 94-61.
The Indiana Fever star finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 assists. She also had three rebounds and three three-pointers.
The 24-year-old sharpshooter picked up where she left off after leading Team USA in the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers. The Americans went undefeated in the tournament, and Clark brought home the MVP honors.
With a great collection of WNBA stars, the 6-foot guard had no problem getting her teammates involved. However, Clark told the truth about how her teammates make her playmaking look even better.
“Anybody I pass the ball to,” Clark said. “It feels like they’re never gonna miss a shot.”
The Team USA guard also shared her objectives heading into the World Cup.
“That’s one of my goals when I come into the game,” she said. “Facilitate, play fast, set up my teammates, get into the paint, get some penetration, especially with their zone (defense).
“That’s one of my focus points coming into the game… Allow my teammates to get open looks.”
In her three-year WNBA career, Clark has never averaged less than eight assists per game. She also led the league in assists during her rookie year.
The USA will face Italy on Sunday for their next Group D matchup. They will close out the group stage on Monday when they face the Czech Republic.
Clark and Co. are the heavy favorites to go all the way and win the tournament, potentially securing their fifth straight gold medal in the World Cup.
