WNBA stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese helped lead the Team USA women’s basketball squad to a gold medal at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Clark and Reese, longtime rivals, both came off of the bench for Team USA. They were key role players for Kara Lawson’s squad. The WNBA stars will now return to the league, ahead of a postseason push.
Following Sunday night’s win against France, Clark was asked by a reporter if she and Reese are “friends now.”
Clark did not appreciate the question.
“Are you and (Angel Reese) friends now?” the reporter asked.
Clark responded: “We’ve always been friends. Don’t try to do that.”
WNBA fans loved this response from Clark
WNBA fans loved to see Clark shutting down the reporter’s question following the gold medal win on Sunday.
“They just won the gold medal and this the nonsense you ask her?” one fan wrote.
“Media has really been trying to force a rivalry for years,” one fan added.
“Love to see Clark shutting this nonsense down. Good for her,” one fan aded.
“YOU HEAR THIS CC FANS ITS ALWAYS BEEN Y’ALL THEY ARE JUST TWO YOUNG BALLERS TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THE WNBA,” one fan added.
ESPN was impressed with the win, too.
“It’s a new era for the world’s dominant power in women’s basketball but the same result. Team USA’s last loss in a major international competition was in the 2006 World Cup semifinals to Russia. Before that, the most recent American losses were in the 1992 Olympic semifinals to what was then called the Unified Team (essentially the former Soviet Union with an interim name) and the 1994 World Cup semifinals to Brazil,” they wrote.
“While we already noted Team USA’s only major competition loss in a gold medal game came in the 1983 World Cup to the Soviet Union, the Americans have one other silver medal. That came in the 1976 Olympics, the first time the Summer Games had women’s basketball. But that was a six-team round-robin tournament that the Soviets won by going 5-0. Team USA was 3-2 but took silver thanks to its round-robin win over fellow 3-2 team Bulgaria.”
Well done, Team USA.
