Team USA star Caitlin Clark admitted that she thought their game against France could have been closer.
In the aftermath of their 97-79 victory in the gold medal game of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, Clark shared her honest thoughts during her postgame interview.
The Indiana Fever star was asked to share her reaction to her first gold medal at the senior level. Clark expressed her pride in this incredible career achievement.
“I thought we just really came out after we kind of gave up that 11-point lead (in the first half) and really kind of found our footing a little bit,” Clark said. “Especially in the second half, we just dominated and really never let them back in the game.”
But the three-time WNBA All-Star admitted that she expected the final margin to be closer than it actually was, especially considering how dominant France has been throughout the tournament.
“It was a little more comfortable than maybe I was expecting, but you’ve got to give France a lot of credit,” Clark added. “They’ve had a great tournament, but we were just resilient. I just think it shows the dominance we have in the U.S. in terms of basketball.
“So, super fun team to be a part of.”
Clark finished the game with 12 points, one rebound and three assists to help the national team secure their 12th gold medal in the tournament and their fifth straight.
The first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft averaged 7.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 19.3 minutes per game off the bench for Team USA.
Clark will now return to the Fever and look to resume what has been an incredible campaign in the WNBA.
