Caitlin Clark’s fans have accused the WNBA of having a “double standard” when it comes to their treatment of Las Vegas Aces star forward A’ja Wilson.
Wilson went into the stands to confront a fan who was “pointing” at her late in Game 2. Wilson was hit with a technical foul, though she was not ejected. The fan was allowed to remain in his seat after a review.
“If I see a man come at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don’t give a (expletive) what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone, that is unacceptable,” Wilson said after the game. “You don’t know me to step toward me and point at me. I’m not for that (expletive) at all … That there is unacceptable. How he gets back in the game because they said he didn’t do anything, of course he did.”
Wilson, who could have been ejected or even suspended for going into the stands, is vowing to not change.
It’s just certain things that I’m not going to allow anymore, because it’s unacceptable,” she said. “You don’t know me at all to come and step toward me and point at me and say anything.”
But as Wilson seems to have avoided punishment for Game 3, is there a double standard in the WNBA?
Fans of Caitlin Clark are pointing to an incident she had earlier this season, when a fan at a game was inching closer to her, taunting her during a game in Golden State.
“The WNBA double standards strike again. In 2024, Spike Lee steps towards Kelsey Plum on the sideline and starts yelling at her. In 2025, Brandin Podziemski follows Caitlin Clark up the sideline and points at her. None of them reacted. Both of incidents are way worse than what Enes Kanter got ejected for,” one fan noted.
“Under WNBA rules, A’ja Wilson should have been ejected for entering the stands to confront a fan as should the Aces players who left the bench. It is time to suspend them all for game 3. Rules being selectively enforced or made up to discriminate against Fever players and fans needs to end.”
The WNBA has yet to state if Wilson will face further discipline. At this point, it seems unlikely.
Game 3 is set for 9 p.m. E.T.
