As if anyone needed more evidence of the positive impact that the "Caitlin Clark Effect" is having on the WNBA's ratings, the latest numbers on the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game is yet more evidence of how vital she is to the league.

On Tuesday, ESPN released its numbers for the WNBA All-Star Game, which reached 3.2 million average viewers and peaked at 3.3 million. It was a 44-percent year-over-year ratings increase (Clark did not play in last year's All-Star Game due to injury) and the second-most viewed All-Star Game in league history (behind only the 2024 game where Clark made her debut).

The Caitlin Clark Effect

Clark has now played in six of the 10 highest-rated games in WNBA history, including three of the top five. Her arrival in 2024 has been credited with producing record-breaking television ratings, sold-out arenas, soaring merchandise sales, and unprecedented media coverage for the league. Teams routinely moved games against Clark and the Indiana Fever to larger venues to accommodate demand, while national television audiences and ticket prices reached levels rarely seen in WNBA history.

The league has also benefited from increased sponsorships, stronger social media engagement, and higher attendance across multiple franchises, with many analysts crediting Clark as a major catalyst for the WNBA's rapid commercial growth.

The phrase has also become intertwined with debate and controversy. Supporters argue that Clark's popularity has introduced millions of new fans to women's basketball and accelerated the league's long-term growth, making her one of the most influential athletes in the sport. Others emphasize that the WNBA's success is the result of many star players—including A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Angel Reese, and Napheesa Collier—whose accomplishments helped build the league before Clark arrived.

The discussion has at times expanded beyond basketball to include conversations about media coverage, race, player recognition, officiating, and how the league should balance celebrating its newest superstar while continuing to promote its many established stars.
