The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are facing questions about their decision to retain Riley Dixon after the veteran punter struggled to deliver consistent field position during the 2026 season.

FOX Sports reporter Greg Auman highlighted the issue Monday, pointing to Dixon’s disappointing net punting numbers despite his $3 million contract.

Dixon returned to Tampa Bay on a two-year, $6 million deal, with $3 million guaranteed. The investment has become harder to justify as the Buccaneers attempt to recover from a difficult stretch that has put additional pressure on the roster and coaching staff.

Dixon’s production has raised concerns about the value Tampa Bay is receiving from its special teams unit. Through six games, he has averaged 43.7 yards per punt, while his net average has fallen to approximately 38 yards. Those numbers have left the Buccaneers searching for more consistency from a position that can significantly influence field position.

The concern extends beyond the distance of individual punts. Net punting accounts for return yards, making it a useful measure of how effectively a specialist limits the opponent’s starting position. Tampa Bay needs better results in that area as it looks to end its losing streak.

Dixon’s previous experience makes the situation particularly frustrating. The veteran has spent several seasons in the NFL and entered Tampa Bay with an established track record. However, his current performance has created questions about whether the Buccaneers should explore alternatives.

Head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Jason Licht now face pressure to address the team’s declining results. Any decision to bring in competition would require weighing Dixon’s experience against the possibility of finding a more productive option.

The Buccaneers have a chance to respond when they face the Carolina Panthers in Week 7. Improving special teams could help Tampa Bay gain better field position and ease the burden on its offense.

Dixon’s contract alone does not make him the cause of Tampa Bay’s struggles. However, if his production remains near the bottom of the league, the team’s decision to invest $3 million in him will continue to attract scrutiny.
