The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-4 to start their season, and nobody really thought that would be the case right now. Tampa Bay just extended quarterback Baker Mayfield's contract before the season got underway, and there was a lot of excitement about the upcoming season.
But here it is, heading into Week 5, and the Bucs haven't even won a single game. It's definitely not a good look, and now Mayfield is dealing with an injury that could keep him sidelined for several weeks.
So, what's a team to do? Now, the team is being linked to a quarterback from the San Francisco 49ers as a possible trade target.
The Buccaneers could target a San Francisco 49ers quarterback
In a Tuesday feature for Bleacher Report, Alex Kay lays out trade ideas for each of the teams that haven't won a game. In it, he has the Bucs getting quarterback Mac Jones from the San Francisco 49ers, with the Niners getting a conditional 2027 third-round draft pick.
"When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers issued a blockbuster contract extension to Baker Mayfield right before the 2026 NFL season kicked off," he says in the piece, "they probably didn't expect an undrafted rookie to be their starting quarterback with the season on the line in Week 4."
They have Jalon Daniels filling in, and it's not that he's doing badly, but he's just not prepared for this kind of action. Kay sees Jones as being a good fit for this situation.
"Jones would be costly and doesn't profile as a long-term option in Tampa due to his expiring contract and expected suitors this offseason, but shipping over a conditional pick (one that scales based on how the Bucs finish the season) for a vastly improved chance at making the playoffs could be worth the price of admission," he says.
The Bucs need to do something if they have any chance of getting to the postseason, and there are certainly worse ideas than this one.
