The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came within three points of their first win on Sunday, but the pressure Jalon Daniels faced in his first NFL start left a sharper concern than the final score in a 17-14 home loss to the Green Bay Packers.
The rookie quarterback faced unblocked edge pressure on three consecutive snaps during the decisive final drive, putting the focus on the protection plan around him rather than simply the result.
Locked On Bucs host James Yarcho said the Buccaneers failed to alter their answer after Green Bay repeatedly sent an edge blitzer free in that final drive. Daniels escaped the first rush and threw the ball away, then took a sack on the next snap before facing another immediate pressure on fourth down. Yarcho argued offensive coordinator Zac Robinson neither changed the protection nor kept an extra blocker in to give the rookie a workable final possession.
Daniels completed 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions while adding 55 rushing yards in his starting debut. He also delivered the franchise’s first touchdown pass by an undrafted rookie quarterback. The performance provided evidence that Daniels can create outside structure, but Yarcho’s criticism centered on how often the offense required him to do so.
Yarcho also connected the loss to head coach Todd Bowles’ defensive approach. Packers quarterback Jordan Love consistently got the ball out quickly, limiting Tampa Bay’s ability to turn its rush into pressure. Yarcho contended that the coverage cushions Bowles employed gave Love the easy throws that kept the Packers on schedule.
The short week makes the protection issue more urgent. Tampa Bay travels to face the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Oct. 8, and Daniels may again need the staff to build a plan that accounts for pressure before the snap rather than asking Daniels to escape it after.
The Buccaneers are 0-4, and the next question is whether Robinson and Bowles make practical adjustments quickly enough to give their rookie starter a fairer chance in Dallas.
Buccaneers News and Notes
– Tampa Bay safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib) exited in the fourth quarter after recording 6 tackles and forcing a fumble. His status will carry immediate importance ahead of the Cowboys’ passing attack on a four-day turnaround.
– Tampa Bay wide receiver Emeka Egbuka caught 2 passes for 13 yards against Green Bay. Yarcho cited Egbuka’s limited involvement as another example of an offense that has not consistently featured its most dynamic options.
– Tampa Bay running backs Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker also became part of Yarcho’s personnel-usage critique. Irving logged 16 carries, while Yarcho questioned why Tucker disappeared after an early touchdown run.
