The Carolina Panthers are getting weekly proof that Bryce Young is their long-term answer at quarterback. Young threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in Sunday night’s 32-26 win over the Detroit Lions, delivering the latest and strongest entry in a four-game start that has changed the stakes around the former No. 1 overall pick.
Locked On Panthers host Julian Council said Young has already moved beyond the uncertainty that surrounded him entering the season, arguing that the quarterback’s play has put an eventual extension on the horizon. Young’s production has supplied a compelling case: He has completed 101 of 162 passes for 1,268 yards, nine touchdowns, two interceptions and a 100.0 passer rating through four games.
Young’s performance against Detroit came while Carolina worked through an uneven supporting cast. The Panthers were without several regular contributors, yet Young repeatedly found wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, who posted career highs with 14 catches and 192 yards while scoring twice. McMillan’s dominant night gave Young a primary target who could win even when the defense knew where the ball was likely headed.
The larger development is that Young did not need the offense to be perfect around him. Council credited the offensive staff, including play-caller Brad Idzik and head coach Dave Canales, for helping Young protect the ball and create explosive plays. Young’s two interceptions through four weeks stand in contrast to the turnover issues characteristic of his first three seasons.
Carolina enters its Week 5 bye at 2-2, giving Young and the offense time to build on a performance that featured 32 points against a quality opponent. The next test comes when the Panthers visit the Philadelphia Eagles, and the question is no longer whether Young can flash high-end play. It is whether he can keep making it routine.
Panthers News and Notes
– Panthers cornerbacks Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) remain on injured reserve, leaving Akayleb Evans and Will Lee III with significant responsibilities. Council said the bye gives Dan Morgan and the personnel staff a realistic window to pursue veteran help before the next game.
– Panthers outside linebacker Nic Scourton (knee) is out for the season, but Council argued the team has enough internal pass-rush depth to avoid another outside addition. He pointed to outside linebackers Princely Umanmielen, Patrick Jones II and Trevis Gipson as players who have helped absorb the loss.
