For years now, the Boston Bruins have been a consistent presence in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but after finishing with 135 and 109 points between 2022 and 2024, they had a major drop off in 2024-25.

In that season, they ended the year with a record of 33-39-10, finishing last in the Atlantic Division, eventually moving franchise icon Brad Marchand in a deal that shocked the hockey world. In 2025-26, they bounced back in a major way, with their stars leading them back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but after being eliminated in round one by the division rival Buffalo Sabres, the season ultimately ends as a failure.

That leads them into an off-season where they need to make some big additions, and after the Toronto Maple Leafs won the draft lottery, the Bruins lost out on the possibility of landing a pick in the 5-10 range in the 2026 NHL Draft. With limited talent available in free agency, the team will likely need to look to the trade market to make improvements, and now, President Cam Neely has revealed what the team will be looking to add.

"We all recognize this room that we don't have a true No. 1 right now", Neely said. "Whether it's growing one from within our organization or going outside our group to get one, we know that is something that we need to rectify".

Over this past era, the Bruins were getting elite level center play from Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci every single season, but since the retirement of their long-time captain, they've failed to find a suitable replacement.

This past season, their 1-2 combination at the top of the lineup was Pavel Zacha and Elias Lindholm, and while the two combined for 47 goals and 113 points, given what it takes to win in the NHL, they needed much more from their two stars up front. As Neely suggests, that could come from a trade, free agency or the potential rise of a player such as James Hagens or Fraser Minten, and with so many options, it's clear the Bruins will be big time buyers this summer as they look to take another step forward.
