It’s March Madness, and Bruce Pearl has been making headlines for both positive and controversial reasons. But when the biggest college basketball news broke on Tuesday night, Pearl immediately took to X to share his thoughts.
Following their first-round elimination from the NCAA Tournament, UNC decided to part ways with Hubert Davis. The veteran coach released a statement on Instagram, thanking the program for the opportunity and sharing a heartfelt message for the staff and players.
The 55-year-old also confirmed he has no plans to retire, stating he looks to return to coaching in the “very near future.” Speaking of retired coaches, Bruce Pearl was among the first to react to UNC’s decision. “Very good coach, better man, and our game is better with him!” he wrote.
While Pearl has spoken very highly of Davis, his firing didn’t come out of nowhere. After being promoted to head coach at the storied Tar Heels program in 2021, Davis compiled a 125‑54 overall record at UNC, going 68‑30 in the ACC. Expectations were high when the former NBA guard guided the squad to the national championship game in his first season, but results in the following years were inconsistent by North Carolina standards.
The Tar Heels missed the 2023 NCAA Tournament entirely and suffered early exits in both the 2025 and 2026 tournaments, including a shocking first-round overtime loss to the VCU Rams just days ago, where UNC blew a 19-point lead. Those setbacks ultimately led to the school parting ways with Davis this month.
Nevertheless, Pearl’s comments reflect his understanding of the grind coaches face and what it takes to lead a major program. His readiness to highlight not only Davis’s coaching but also his character illustrates how close-knit the coaching community can be, despite rivalries and the drama surrounding the job market.
