Deshaun Watson’s future with the Cleveland Browns remains uncertain as the quarterback plays through the final year of his five-year, fully guaranteed contract.
The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reported Saturday that Watson’s performance for the rest of the season will determine whether he remains in Cleveland beyond 2026, with one league source saying a return remains a realistic possibility.
“The door is wide open for him to be with the Browns,” the league source told Jones. “It’s the only line on a starting quarterback job he’ll have. And even if you are in position to take one high, or get in position to do so, you’re in no rush to play the rookie.”
Watson has helped Cleveland start 4-2 atop the AFC North. Meanwhile, Watson’s backup, Shedeur Sanders, made headlines last week by hiring an agent, which some interpreted as a move linked to his potential exit from Cleveland.
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam declined to get ahead of the situation when Jones asked him about Watson’s future.
“That’s way premature to talk about that,” Haslam said. “We’re just focused on beating the Titans. People have to respect the way that he’s battled back from the injuries. And then you look at the game-winning drives. We’ve got to be able to keep that up.”
According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns are not interested in trading Sanders at this point.
In Jones’ eyes, Watson could play his way into an extension with Cleveland or a deal elsewhere. However, his injury history, previous NFL suspension, and off-field history could affect his market.

According to Jones, a second league source “emphasized how difficult a negotiation it could be.” If Watson maintains his current level, Cleveland could have reason to retain him, but his leverage outside the organization may be limited.
That said, the Browns own two first-round picks in the 2027 NFL Draft, giving them flexibility to pursue a young quarterback if they decide to move on from Watson.
Cleveland faces the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, with Watson set to start his seventh game of the season.
