The Browns went into training camp with an open quarterback competition, intending to rotate QB1 snaps between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
“I really don’t know. I’m not going to name a No. 1 … chances are, I will not,” Monken said this summer. “Now, once we get to the fall, we’ll have to dissect the reps how we see fit. I just don’t see it after the way Shedeur’s played and Deshaun’s played, they’ve both played well enough to earn the right to compete to start.”
He added: “Nothing’s really changed. We’re gonna rotate those guys and play the best player. We’ll see.”
But a few days into training camp, and the plans already appear to have changed in a significant way.

While the Browns intended to rotate first-team snaps between Watson and Sanders, the plans appear to have changed already.
Watson received more of the first-team snaps over the weekend, perhaps indicating that he is beginning to emerge in the competition.
Browns have already changed QB plans
It's a notable change.
"The Browns have been rotating quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders with the first team from day to day at training camp, so any deviation from that schedule is sure to grab attention. Such a deviation came on Saturday. Head coach Todd Monken said before practice that it would be Sanders working with the first team, but multiple reporters shared that Watson received all of the work with the first team," Mike Florio shared.
"Monken did not speak to the media after practice. A team spokesman said, via multiple reporters, that Monken changed the plans because he wanted to see Watson with certain personnel groups."
