Shedeur Sanders had an opportunity to establish himself as the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback during the offseason. Instead, the second-year quarterback will begin the 2026 season in a different role after Cleveland officially announced its decision at the position.
The Browns spent much of the offseason evaluating Sanders and Deshaun Watson for the starting job, with Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green also competing for opportunities in the quarterback room. Sanders made a strong case during the preseason, but Browns head coach Todd Monken ultimately gave the starting job to Watson, who brings considerably more NFL experience to the offense.

Ahead of Cleveland’s opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Monken provided an update on Sanders’ status. The second-year quarterback is expected to be Cleveland’s backup quarterback in Week 1, putting him directly behind Watson when the Browns open the season on the road.
Cleveland’s unofficial depth chart lists Watson first, Sanders second and Green third, while Gabriel is currently listed on injured reserve.
Sanders showed some progress during the preseason and remains firmly in the Browns’ plans despite losing the starting competition. His experience from last season also gives him an advantage over the rookie if Cleveland needs to turn to its backup.
The Browns placed Gabriel on injured reserve despite speculation that he could be released, and he also remains part of Cleveland’s long-term plans. Gabriel was selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft and started six games as a rookie.
The Browns begin the season on Sunday and Watson will get the first opportunity to lead Monken’s offense.
