Bronny James is set to begin his third NBA season when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. The 2024 second round pick made the final roster cut despite speculation that he could be waived, with the Lakers ultimately releasing Dalton Knecht instead. James now has another opportunity to establish himself as a dependable contributor following a significant offseason roster overhaul.
James struggled during the preseason, averaging just 2.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists across five games. He shot 25% from the field and 12.5% from three-point range while averaging 2.4 turnovers in 16.4 minutes per game.

However, an injury may have played a role in those performances. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported on James’ condition and his role during training camp ahead of the season opener.
“[Bronny] James, for his part, has been limited by a quad contusion he suffered just before the start of training camp,” McMenamin wrote. “[JJ] Redick added that the third-year guard has often shared the court with training camp invitees.”
This season will be important for James as he tries to earn a consistent role. Although he showed flashes of defensive potential and contributed during last season’s playoffs, his offensive production remains an area of concern. And with several new players competing for minutes, he will need to make the most of his opportunities.
The Lakers will need contributions beyond their leading scorers this season. With a projected starting lineup that features Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Walker Kessler, James will make his case for minutes off the bench.
The Lakers host Stephen Curry and the Warriors at Crypto.com Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET, with national television coverage on ESPN.
