Britt McHenry is back in media, just not in the sports world.
The former ESPN reporter has remained active on social media in recent years, after leaving the Worldwide Leader in Sports, but she had some big news to announce on Wednesday evening.
McHenry will be joining the State Department.
“Big news: I am a newly appointed press advisor for the State Department of the United States of America. Honored to serve our country’s highest diplomatic institution. Blessed to work for some amazing people (thank you!!),” she announced.
“Writers wrote about it. So here you go.”
Barrett Media broke the big news on Wednesday.
“McHenry has spent much of her career covering sports and news across television and digital media. She previously worked at local television stations in Washington, D.C., before joining ESPN as a reporter. After leaving ESPN, she continued building a media career that included work with The Spectator and Real America’s Voice. McHenry also returned to Washington television during her career, adding further experience covering news and politics. Her move to the State Department now shifts that experience from covering public affairs to helping communicate them,” they reported.
“McHenry’s appointment gives the State Department an advisor with extensive experience working in front of television cameras and across news platforms. Moreover, her background spans sports, political commentary, and digital media. That combination could prove useful as the department works to communicate its message across traditional and emerging media. The move also marks a notable transition for McHenry, who will now help shape the messaging she once spent her career reporting.”
It’s unclear what exactly McHenry will be doing for the state department on a daily basis, but she’s bringing more than a decade of sports media experience to the role.
McHenry’s new role comes ahead of a busy fall season for all in media.
