The NFL offseason is built on opportunity, but it is just as much about tough decisions. Every roster move, especially at the back end, shows how quickly teams evaluate talent and adjust. For the Dallas Cowboys, that process is already in motion under head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

With rookie minicamps and early evaluations underway, players are fighting to prove they belong, often in a matter of days. That urgency can create quick turnarounds, where one signing immediately leads to another departure. It is a constant cycle that defines this stage of the NFL calendar, and it is exactly what played out with Dallas’ latest offensive line decision.

Cowboys Make Quick Roster Decision

According to Todd Archer, the Cowboys waived undrafted guard Sidney Fugar shortly after adding another offensive lineman. Dallas signed undrafted rookie D.J. Wingfield, and the move required a corresponding roster change.

Fugar’s time with the team lasted less than a week. He did not appear in a game and was still in the earliest phase of offseason evaluation. Situations like this are common across the league, where undrafted players are brought in for competition but must quickly separate themselves.

The Cowboys now have one open spot on their 91-man roster, with Dayo Odeleye counting as an international exemption.

A Journey That Never Reached The Field

Fugar’s path to the NFL included multiple stops at the college level. He began at Western Illinois, where he became a starting left tackle as a redshirt freshman. He later transferred to South Carolina, gaining experience on both sides of the line while appearing in 10 games and making four starts.

He finished his college career at Baylor, where he played in 24 games across two seasons and made 15 starts. His versatility along the offensive line helped him earn an opportunity with Dallas as an undrafted free agent.

Despite that experience, his release underscores how competitive roster spots are, especially for players trying to break in without draft status.

What It Means For Brian Schottenheimer’s Cowboys

Early offseason moves like this are less about final roster construction and more about constant evaluation. Under Schottenheimer, the Cowboys are cycling through options to find depth pieces who can develop into reliable contributors.

Adding Wingfield while moving on from Fugar shows Dallas is still searching for the right combination along the offensive line. These decisions will continue through training camp as the team narrows down its roster.

For players on the fringe, the margin is small. One transaction can open up an opportunity, while another can end it just as quickly. For the Cowboys, this is simply part of the process as they shape the roster heading into the 2026 season.
