The Milwaukee Brewers have recalled right-hander Brandon Sproat from Triple-A Nashville after losing reliever Grant Anderson to a right biceps injury. Anderson was placed on the 15-day Injured List, creating an immediate need for another arm in Milwaukee’s bullpen.
Sproat gives the Brewers some much-needed length after a demanding stretch for the pitching staff. The 25-year-old returns to the majors after spending time in Nashville adjusting to a relief role.
The Brewers announced the roster move Monday, placing Anderson on the IL because of right biceps inflammation. Anderson has been one of Milwaukee’s more frequently used relievers this season, appearing in 52 games while posting a 3.36 ERA and 3-3 record.
The timing is especially notable after Milwaukee’s pitching staff endured a taxing weekend. The Brewers needed additional coverage, and Sproat’s ability to handle multiple innings gives manager Pat Murphy another option to protect his higher-leverage arms.
Sproat previously worked primarily as a starter during his first major league stint this season. He went 3-7 with a 5.27 ERA and 100 strikeouts over 95.2 innings across 21 appearances.
His time with Nashville allowed the Brewers to reshape his role. Rather than preparing exclusively for starts, Sproat worked shorter outings that could better translate to a long-relief assignment in Milwaukee.

The promotion comes with the Brewers sitting comfortably atop the National League Central. Milwaukee improved to 89-56 after Monday’s 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs, giving the club an eight-game lead with 17 games remaining.
That cushion gives Murphy some room to manage his pitching staff carefully, but Anderson’s absence still removes a reliable option from the bullpen.
For now, Sproat will be tasked with helping absorb those innings while Anderson recovers. If he can provide length in the middle innings, the Brewers can keep their most important relievers fresh for the postseason push.
