Brewers Make Move Immediately After Unfortunate Brandon Woodruff News

The Milwaukee Brewers made another pitching move Sunday after Brandon Woodruff exited his latest start with another injury concern.

The club placed the 33-year-old right-hander on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation and recalled left-hander Drew Rom from Triple-A Nashville before the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The transaction came less than 24 hours after Woodruff departed Saturday's outing in the fourth inning after throwing 61 pitches. Milwaukee remains atop the National League Central, but the latest setback creates another question for a rotation that has already dealt with multiple injuries this season.

Woodruff left the game after his velocity dropped significantly, with none of his pitches in the fourth inning reaching 87.3 mph. Further testing will determine the severity of the shoulder issue.

Manager Pat Murphy said, "It's in the same area, same spot. That cyst develops. He's got that tear in the labrum there and that cyst develops, it flares up."

Woodruff added, "It gets a little frustrating dealing with this. It kind of comes in waves."

The two-time All-Star has gone 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA, a 0.84 WHIP and 47 strikeouts over 45 1/3 innings in nine starts this season after returning from an earlier shoulder injury.

Rom gives Milwaukee a fresh bullpen arm after posting a 2.51 ERA with 47 strikeouts across 32 1/3 innings in 25 relief appearances for Triple-A Nashville. The 26-year-old has also appeared in four games for the Brewers this season, recording a 3.38 ERA with 10 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

The Brewers entered Sunday with a 54-33 record atop the NL Central. Rom is expected to work in middle or long relief while the club evaluates Woodruff's condition and determines how to replace one of its top starters.
