The Milwaukee Brewers were forced into a late lineup change before Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins after second baseman Brice Turang was scratched with right foot soreness. Manager Pat Murphy's club made the decision after Turang experienced discomfort stemming from fouling a ball off his foot during Friday night's series opener.
The move comes with Milwaukee leading the National League Central at 60-37, though the club has continued to navigate several injury concerns despite its strong first half. Turang entered Saturday slashing .263/.359/.460 with 14 home runs, 60 RBIs, 66 runs scored and 15 stolen bases through 92 games, making him one of the Brewers' most valuable everyday players.
The Brewers quickly announced a replacement, inserting Braden Shewmake into the starting lineup at second base. Shewmake was slotted into the eighth spot in the batting order as Milwaukee looked to avoid making any additional game-day adjustments.
The opportunity comes shortly after Shewmake joined the organization in a trade from the Houston Astros, giving Milwaukee another versatile infield option while David Hamilton remains on the injured list. His ability to play multiple positions has added valuable depth for a club dealing with injuries across its roster.
The lineup shuffle follows another roster move earlier Saturday, when the Brewers placed right fielder Sal Frelick on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain and recalled Blake Perkins from Triple-A Nashville. Even with those setbacks, Milwaukee continues to own one of the National League's best records entering the second half.
Turang is currently considered day-to-day, and Saturday's decision appears to be precautionary rather than an indication of a more serious injury. The Brewers will likely continue monitoring his foot before determining whether he can return during the remainder of the Marlins series.
