The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Brett Bateman is out of the club’s doubleheader today against the Baltimore Orioles after he underwent an MRI on his right hip, manager John Schneider said, according to Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae.
The imaging revealed inflammation but nothing structural, Mae reported on Wednesday. Bateman was not in the lineup for the first game of the Blue Jays’ doubleheader against the Orioles, with Myles Straw starting in center field and batting eighth.
The 24-year-old left Monday’s 4-3 loss in Baltimore after a diving catch to end the second inning. The Blue Jays announced he exited with right hip discomfort, and X-rays came back negative for a fracture. Schneider said after the game that the hip was tender and the team would take it day by day.
Bateman initially appeared to have injured his right knee, which dug into the wet grass at Camden Yards as he slid. Schneider said the team feared a knee or ankle injury while watching the play and was relieved when they were able to rule that out.
Bateman has produced since joining the Blue Jays on August 7 after a trade with the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline. He is hitting .320 with a .394 on-base percentage and a .413 slugging percentage with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 38 games.

Toronto, just like Baltimore, has an elimination number of 1 today, meaning a loss in either game on Wednesday would eliminate them from the postseason. Being four games back of the Chicago White Sox for the final AL Wild Card spot, Toronto would need to win out and hope the White Sox lose out for any chance of playing October baseball.
