The Atlanta Braves selected veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco to the major league roster Sunday after optioning right-hander J.R. Ritchie to Triple-A Gwinnett following Saturday's game.
The move gives Atlanta another experienced arm as the club continues navigating injuries throughout its pitching staff. Carrasco was immediately available after having his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Ritchie, 22, is one of the Braves' top pitching prospects after being selected in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He was optioned back to Gwinnett after making his latest major league appearance Saturday as Atlanta adjusted its pitching depth for the series finale against the New York Mets.
Carrasco, 39, signed a minor league contract with Atlanta before the 2026 season and has moved between Triple-A and the majors while providing veteran depth. The Venezuelan right-hander has appeared in seven games for the Braves this season, posting a 3.68 ERA with six strikeouts across 14 2/3 innings, all in relief.
Atlanta has relied on experienced pitchers like Carrasco throughout the season as injuries have tested its pitching staff. Bringing back the 17-year major league veteran gives the club another dependable option capable of covering multiple innings.
The Braves entered Sunday with a 52-35 record, leading the National League East by three games over the Philadelphia Phillies. Adding Carrasco strengthens the club's pitching depth as it looks to maintain its position atop the division during the second half.

Carrasco spent most of his career with the Cleveland Guardians before later pitching for the New York Mets and New York Yankees. His experience has made him a valuable depth piece as Atlanta continues managing injuries throughout its staff.
The Braves conclude their series against the New York Mets on Sunday before continuing their homestand, with Carrasco available to contribute as the club pursues another National League East title.
