The Atlanta Braves have a healthy eight game lead in the NL East division following Sunday's win over the Washington Nationals. Despite that lead, it was evident that the team needed help with its starting rotation if it is to go anywhere in the MLB playoffs.
On Sunday, with just one day left before the MLB trade deadline, the Braves swung a trade with the San Francisco Giants to add some veteran depth to their rotation. As first reported by FanSided insider Robert Murray, the Braves traded right-handed pitching prospect Anthony Molina for starter Tyler Mahle.
Mahle, 31, signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Giants in the offseason and is set to be a free agent after the year is over. Like most of the Giants' team, Mahle has struggled this year, scuffling to a 3-9 record with a 5.13 ERA and 1.394 WHIP in 18 appearances. If this ERA holds, it would be Mahle's worst statistical season since 2019. Although Mahle is a good depth piece for the Braves, he's never pitched in a postseason game in his 10-year career.
The addition of Mahle will strengthen the back-end of the rotation that follows Chris Sale. Atlanta has been decimated by injuries this year, with both Spencer Schwellenbach and Spencer Strider dealing with elbow injuries. The Braves have been putting out a patchwork rotation that includes JR Ritchie, Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder, and Martin Perez. There is a chance that Schwellenbach could return in September, although he will likely be on an innings limit and potentially a strict pitch count.
AJ Smith-Shawver recently returned after a year away from the game due to Tommy John surgery. He made one start and was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett, although he should be back with the big-league team soon. There is also a strong possibility that Strider will miss the remainder of the season after meeting with Dr. Keith Meister about his elbow.
Molina is a 24-year-old prospect out of Venezuela, who the Braves picked up off waivers in December. He made three appearances for the Braves this season, posting a 5.40 ERA and 1.400 WHIP in five innings of work. Molina previously made 52 appearances for the Colorado Rockies in 2024 and 2025.
