The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk have been battling for over a year now. The receiver has long been unhappy with the 49ers, and it's clear the relationship is broken beyond repair.
Aiyuk has been on the reserve/left squad list since December, so he doesn't count against the team's 90-man roster or cap sheet. There's little to no reason to think any team would trade for him and his contract, especially considering his offseason behavior.
At the beginning of the offseason, the Washington Commanders were frequently mentioned as a landing spot. The Commanders needed receiver depth, and Aiyuk expressed a desire to play with his former teammate Jayden Daniels.
However, Aiyuk demonstrated bizarre behavior that even included throwing shots at Daniels. The receiver still claims to want to play for the Commanders, but the move they made on Wednesday indicates that ship has sailed.
Commanders Sign Stefon Diggs
On Wednesday, the Commanders agreed to a deal with Stefon Diggs. Diggs was among the best remaining free agents and fills a huge need for the Commanders. Diggs is also a native of the DMV area, so this pairing was speculated about for a while.
With Diggs in tow, there's even less reason to think the Commanders would be interested in bringing Aiyuk in. Diggs fills that veteran outside receiver role opposite Terry McLaurin, so even without the baggage, Aiyuk would be redundant.
This was the safer decision for the Commanders to make. Diggs was elite as recently as last year, while Aiyuk hasn't been so since 2023. Diggs has some off-field drama as well, but he was a free agent and not attached to a team like Aiyuk currently is.
What's Next for Aiyuk?
It's hard to say what comes next for the receiver. 49ers general manager John Lynch recently stated that there is no update on the situation, and Aiyuk won't be playing for the team in 2026.
It still seems likely that the 49ers will eventually release the receiver. There's no denying that Aiyuk is a difference-maker when healthy, but will teams be scared off by his offseason behavior? With the Commanders likely out of the running, it will be interesting to see if a receiver-needy team like the Miami Dolphins or Las Vegas Raiders would be willing to take a swing.
There's no denying that, at this point, everybody is ready for a conclusion to this saga.
