After months of rumors and speculation, the Washington Commanders are signing Stefon Diggs to a one-year, $12 million contract. With a proven veteran now in the fold, Brandon Aiyuk's chances of reuniting with former Arizona State teammateJayden Daniels appear to be fading.
A native of Montgomery County, Maryland, Diggs is coming off a 1,000-yard season in New England, where he played a pivotal role in helping the Patriots reach the Super Bowl. After productive stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans, Diggs established himself as one of the NFL's premier route runners and pass catchers.

Despite joining the Commanders two weeks into training camp, Diggs enters a wide receiver room that lacks proven production outside of Terry McLaurin. After tearing his ACL in 2024, Diggs rebounded with another 1,000-yard campaign in 2025, demonstrating both his resilience and ability to produce at a high level. His experience and competitive mindset should allow him to make an immediate impact on Washington's offense.
Rookie Antonio Williams has already shown the vision and speed needed to succeed at the NFL level. Diggs' presence should force defenses to account for another established playmaker, creating more favorable matchups and opening opportunities for Williams to find space downfield.
While they play different positions, Diggs will also compete with tight end Chig Okonkwo for targets. Head coach Dan Quinn has made it clear that Okonkwo will play a significant role in the passing game, particularly off play-action concepts. After surpassing 500 receiving yards in 2025, Okonkwo is expected to remain a key part of the offense.
Much-needed depth in the room
The Commanders' lack of wide receiver depth became evident during training camp in 2025 when McLaurin missed time with injuries. Washington attempted to address the issue during the offseason by drafting Antonio Williams and re-signing Treylon Burks, but neither move fully convinced fans that the position group was ready to contend.
Adding Diggs changes that outlook. A first-team All-Pro in 2020 and a second-team All-Pro in 2022, Diggs has recorded seven 1,000-yard seasons during his 11-year career. At 32 years old, he no longer possesses the same game-breaking speed that defined his early years, and with McLaurin now 30, the signing is unlikely to serve as a long-term solution. However, it provides the Commanders with an immediate upgrade and gives Daniels another proven target as Washington prepares for the 2026 season.
