The Toronto Blue Jays have been forced to navigate a number of pitching injuries at a crucial point in their season, with Trey Yesavage among the latest starters sidelined. The rookie right-hander underwent surgery on his left knee last week after suffering a meniscus injury during his Aug. 4 start against the Houston Astros.
Yesavage has remained focused on getting back on the mound, with the Blue Jays previously leaving the door open for a return later this season. The 23-year-old is considered week-to-week after the procedure, but the club has not ruled out seeing him pitch again in 2026.

An encouraging update emerged on Tuesday as the Blue Jays prepare to open their series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Per Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling, Yesavage has now resumed throwing from flat ground at the Blue Jays’ player development complex in Dunedin, Florida, marking another step in his recovery.
He will continue building himself back up with the goal of putting himself in position to return to game action late this season.
The update comes as Toronto begins a challenging six-game road stretch, starting with three games against Tampa Bay before heading to the Bronx for a three-game series against the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays are in the middle of a tight American League playoff race, sitting half a game away from the final wild card spot. Their current position undoubtedly makes the possibility of getting Yesavage back down the stretch particularly valuable.

Before the injury, Yesavage had established himself as an important part of Toronto’s rotation. He is 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA and 91 strikeouts across 93⅔ innings in 18 starts this season. He also played a key role in the Blue Jays’ postseason run last year, going 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA across six playoff appearances.
Yesavage’s recovery timeline remains uncertain, but Tuesday’s throwing session gives Toronto another reason to remain hopeful.
