The Toronto Blue Jays have been searching for a power bat all season, and the answer may have been in their own system the entire time. Sean Keys earned his promotion on June 27 after an outstanding minor league campaign that left the club little choice.
Across 67 games between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo, the 23-year-old corner infielder batted .284 with 21 home runs, 54 RBIs and a 1.028 OPS. His promotion to Buffalo on June 5 only accelerated his rise, as he slashed .281/.403/.719 with seven home runs in just 18 games, including seven over his final 10 contests.

After showing flashes in his first two major league games, he enjoyed his breakthrough on Canada Day.
Replacing George Springer, who was placed on the paternity list, Keys blasted the first home run of his MLB career during Wednesday’s game 9-3 win against the New York Mets, sending Rogers Centre into celebration on one of the franchise’s biggest days of the year.
After the game, the rookie reflected on the milestone.
“I loved it," Keys said. "It was incredible. All of the guys told me this would be one of the most special games of the year. I’m honored that I got called up a couple of days before this.”
Keys, a fourth-round selection in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Bucknell University, graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering while posting a 1.187 OPS during his collegiate career. Ranked as the Blue Jays’ No. 14 prospect by MLB Pipeline, he has long been viewed as a disciplined hitter.

The Blue Jays have lacked consistent left-handed power throughout much of the season, making Keys’ arrival particularly timely. His emergence gives manager John Schneider another offensive option as Toronto looks to rebound in the second half of the season.
Schneider had repeatedly indicated that Keys was firmly on the club’s radar before his promotion. Three games into his major league career, the rookie has already begun rewarding that faith.
