The Toronto Blue Jays starting rotation has been completely decimated in the second half of the season. Rookie right-hander and last year’s postseason hero Trey Yesavage is still recovering from left knee surgery. Shane Bieber is currently on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.
Both Patrick Corbin and Jose Berríos are out for the season, leaving trade deadline acquisition Jose Soriano and American League Cy Young contender Dylan Cease as John Schneider’s two main options down the stretch.
Unfortunately for Toronto, another pitcher is now going to be out for the season. Speaking with reporters ahead of Tuesday’s game with the Detroit Tigers, right-hander Jameson Taillon revealed that his season is over.
Taillon said he is seeking clarity on the next steps for his right elbow but remains hopeful it is not anything serious. He hopes that all he needs is an injection and a good offseason to be in a good spot for the 2027 season, per Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.
The Blue Jays acquired Taillon at the trade deadline this year in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. He was expected to be a key piece of the back end of the rotation but made just three appearances in a Blue Jays uniform, pitching 10 innings, striking out six and allowing five runs before the elbow issue surfaced.
Taillon is set to be a free agent at the end of the season, so there is a chance he has already thrown his last pitch in a Blue Jays uniform. However, a reunion is always possible, especially given Toronto targeted him at the deadline. For now though, his absence leaves the organization without another starting pitching option capable of giving them length when they desperately need it.
With 11 games remaining, the Blue Jays sit one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final American League wild card spot.
