Nathan Lukes turned an apology into a memorable response for the Toronto Blue Jays just hours before delivering the biggest hit of Wednesday’s game.
The outfielder had been involved in a costly baserunning mistake during Toronto’s previous loss to the Kansas City Royals. Lukes drove in two runs with a single but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double, ending the game and Toronto’s comeback attempt.
Instead of letting the mistake carry into the next game, Lukes spoke with manager John Schneider before Wednesday’s matchup.
Toronto manager John Schneider shared the interaction with reporters, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, who reported the exchange in a post on X. Schneider said I talked to him today and, as only Lukey can, he said he was sorry … I told him, ‘Dude, the most important game is tonight. Don’t worry about it.’ It’s pretty fitting that he had the big hit today.
Lukes responded in the best possible way. After going 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Tuesday’s loss, he hit a three-run home run on Wednesday to help the Blue Jays secure a 3-0 victory over the Royals.
The swing completed a dramatic 24-hour turnaround for Lukes, whose aggressive decision on the bases had ended the previous night’s game.
Toronto improved to 65-69 with the win and remained in the American League Wild Card race, sitting 1.5 games behind the final postseason spot.

Lukes has appeared in 98 games for Toronto this season, batting .264 with a .316 on-base percentage and a .384 slugging percentage. He has also recorded 84 hits, nine home runs and 31 RBIs.
His latest home run came at an important moment for the Blue Jays, but it also gave Schneider’s pregame message an almost perfect ending.
One day after a mistake that ended in frustration, Luke’s apologized to his manager and returned to the field with a chance to make a difference. Hours later, he delivered the game’s biggest hit.
