The Toronto Blue Jays announced Friday that the roof at Rogers Centre will remain closed for their series opener against the Chicago White Sox because of poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke drifting across southern Ontario.
The decision comes as smoke from ongoing wildfires in northern Ontario has triggered air quality advisories throughout the region, allowing Friday night's game to be played in a climate-controlled environment.
The Blue Jays return from the All-Star break looking to gain ground in the American League East after entering the second half with a 45-51 record. The White Sox, meanwhile, arrive in Toronto tied for first place in the American League Central.
Toronto's announcement ensures the game will proceed as scheduled despite the unhealthy outdoor conditions. Rogers Centre's retractable roof gives the club the flexibility to avoid exposing players, staff and fans to poor air quality.
The series opens an important stretch for the Blue Jays, who are attempting to climb out of last place in a competitive AL East during the season's second half.

The Blue Jays are expected to send right-hander Spencer Miles to the mound for Friday's opener. Toronto is also looking for improved production after making adjustments to its starting rotation following the All-Star break.
With wildfires continuing to impact air quality across Ontario, the roof closure provides a controlled environment for the opener while allowing the Blue Jays and White Sox to begin the series without weather-related delays.
