The Toronto Blue Jays lost catching depth Wednesday after the Seattle Mariners claimed Willie MacIver off waivers before Toronto's matchup against the Boston Red Sox.
Seattle announced the move Wednesday, adding MacIver to its 40-man roster before assigning him to Triple-A Tacoma. The claim gives the Mariners another experienced catcher in the organization while trimming Toronto's roster ahead of the stretch run.
The Mariners shared the transaction on their official X account Wednesday.
MacIver spent the 2026 season with Triple-A Buffalo, where he batted .214 with 39 hits, five home runs and 24 RBIs across 59 games. Known for his defensive ability behind the plate, the 28-year-old now joins Seattle's organization as added insurance behind All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh.
The move comes as the Mariners continue chasing the top of the American League West. Seattle enters Wednesday with a 56-64 record, sitting third in the division and 4.5 games behind the first-place Houston Astros.

For Toronto, the transaction reflects continued roster adjustments as the club evaluates organizational depth. The Blue Jays entered Wednesday at 58-63, last in the American League East, while preparing to face the Boston Red Sox.
Although MacIver is not expected to join Seattle's major league roster immediately, he gives the club another reliable option at Triple-A should injuries create an opening later this season. Toronto, meanwhile, gains additional roster flexibility by moving on from a player who had spent the year with Buffalo.
