The 2025 season feels like a distant memory for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Toronto owns a disappointing 42-49 record less than a week before the All-Star Break. Heading into Tuesday, the Blue Jays sit 11.5 games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, but remain just 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
Toronto is still very much in the postseason race. But every time it appears the Blue Jays take a step forward, they take two steps back.
Monday's series opener against the San Francisco Giants was another example.
The Blue Jays put together arguably their worst all-around performance of the season in a 10-1 loss. Offensively, Toronto managed just three hits and two walks. Defensively, they committed three errors. One of those miscues, by third baseman Kazuma Okamoto, turned a potential double play into a five-run sixth inning for San Francisco.
John Schneider's Brutally Honest Postgame
Following the loss, manager John Schneider did not mince words about his team's performance.
“We sucked today. Plain and simple, from start to finish,” Schneider said.
That emotional reaction perfectly captures how much the Blue Jays have struggled following last season's World Series run.
After leading MLB in batting average (.265), on-base percentage (.333), and hits (1,461), while ranking fourth in runs scored (798) in 2025, Toronto's offense has taken a major step backward in 2026. The Blue Jays' batting average (.242) and on-base percentage (.304) have both dropped significantly. Meanwhile, their 357 runs scored is tied for second-fewest in baseball, ahead of only the San Diego Padres (348).
Those offensive struggles have become even more magnified lately. Okamoto's sixth-inning solo home run on Monday ended a 29.2-inning scoreless streak.
One run over the past three games is not a winning formula. During their current three-game losing streak, the Blue Jays have been outscored 25-1.
Their starting rotation has also dealt with significant adversity. José Berríos (Tommy John surgery) and Cody Ponce (torn ACL) are out for the remainder of the season. Additionally, Patrick Corbin was moved to the bullpen after posting an 8.69 ERA across five June starts, and Max Scherzer is back on the injured list with back spasms.
The defense has not helped either. Toronto's 60 errors are tied for the third-most in baseball.
Everything seems to have unraveled since the Blue Jays' magical 2025 season. Even after adding Okamoto, Dylan Cease, and Tyler Rogers during the offseason, Toronto has failed to live up to their lofty expectations entering 2026.
Monday may have marked the lowest point of the Blue Jays' season. Now, Toronto needs to turn Schneider's blunt postgame message into the spark they desperately need to get back on track.
