The Toronto Blue Jays are heading into another important series with plenty on their plate. After a busy stretch that included a three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto is back home to face the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

The Blue Jays have managed several injury issues this season, forcing John Schneider to make adjustments to his rotation. Entering Monday, the club was again forced to make a minor lineup adjustment after Kazuma Okamoto was scratched with left knee soreness.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider came bearing more bad news when he shared an update on Spencer Arrighetti.

Schneider confirmed that Arrighetti has been diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma, which has been causing the nerve pain in his foot. The condition involves tissue buildup around a nerve in the foot and can cause discomfort when pressure is placed on the area.

Arrighetti’s injury has already delayed his introduction to Toronto’s rotation. The Blue Jays acquired the right-hander from the Houston Astros at the trade deadline, but he remained on the injured list after dealing with right foot nerve irritation. He then exited his first rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo after throwing 39 pitches.

“As far as timeline, we’ll see,” Schneider said. “We’re hoping he can pitch through it & feel better with treatment, but it’s kind of a new one for me” (via Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet).

Arrighetti went 7-5 with a 4.60 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 17 starts for Houston before the trade. He struggled badly over his final nine starts, going 0-5 with an 8.34 ERA, but Toronto still viewed him as a potential addition to its rotation.

The Blue Jays will have to wait and see whether treatment allows Arrighetti to resume his rehab assignment.
