The Toronto Blue Jays received another injury update on Ricky Tiedemann on Thursday as the former top prospect works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
The 23-year-old has long been viewed as one of the organization's brightest young pitchers, but injuries have repeatedly interrupted his development.
Tiedemann entered 2024 as the Blue Jays' No. 1 prospect and one of baseball's highest-ranked pitching prospects. His electric fastball, changeup, and strikeout ability gave him the potential to become a future front-line starter.
Instead, recurring injuries have limited the left-hander to just a handful of appearances over the past two seasons. The latest update is another reminder of how difficult his road back has been.
Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith shared the latest on Tiedemann's rehab.
Tiedemann is receiving injections to address discomfort in his neck and shoulder area after making two rehab appearances in the Florida Complex League. The issue prevented him from pitching over the past two weeks before he was scheduled to continue his rehab assignment.
The 23-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2024 after dealing with multiple elbow issues. He has also battled forearm inflammation and other injuries that have slowed the progress of one of the organization's most talented prospects.
Despite the setbacks, the Toronto Blue Jays still view Tiedemann as an important part of their long-term pitching plans. His combination of velocity and swing-and-miss stuff continues to give him significant upside when healthy.
The Toronto Blue Jays entered Thursday with a 41-46 record and remained in the middle of the American League East.
A healthy Tiedemann could eventually strengthen the organization's pitching depth, but the club continues taking a cautious approach.
For now, the focus remains on getting the former top prospect healthy. Another successful step in his recovery would move him closer to resuming his rehab and restarting a career that has been repeatedly delayed by injuries.
