During a disappointing 2026 MLB season, the Toronto Blue Jays decided to make some notable moves ahead of Monday afternoon’s trade deadline.
Entering Monday’s series opener against the Houston Astros, the Blue Jays are 52-60 and in last place in the American League East. With the postseason likely out of reach this season, Toronto seems to have shifted its focus towards the future.
On Sunday, the Blue Jays parted ways with veteran starter Kevin Gausman in a trade with the Chicago Cubs that sent minor-league prospects Ty Southisene and Brett Bateman to Toronto.
With the team looking to build for the future, outfielder Brett Bateman has become one of the more intriguing long-term additions to the Blue Jays organization.

While Bateman is still developing in the minor leagues, MLB insider Jon Morosi believes the young outfielder could eventually fill an important role in Toronto's lineup.
According to Morosi, Bateman could become an MLB-level center fielder within the next year, and compares his offensive game to current Blue Jay Nathan Lukes.
“For the Blue Jays, newly acquired OF Brett Bateman has the potential to play center field at the MLB level within the next year. Offensive profile is similar to current Jays OF Nathan Lukes,” Morosi shared on X.
The 24-year-old has impressed during his time in the Cubs farm system, and this season with the Iowa Cubs in Triple-A, he slashed .312/.430/.421 with 33 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 82 games.
If he continues to develop as expected, Bateman could eventually compete for playing time in a Toronto outfield that has several questions moving forward. Center fielder Daulton Varsho is set to become a free agent after this season, and Toronto will soon have to decide whether to pursue a new contract or look toward younger options.
Bateman's defensive ability and contact-oriented offensive approach could provide the Blue Jays with another internal option as they reshape their roster.
Although there is still plenty of development ahead before Bateman reaches the major leagues, Morosi’s comments could provide Blue Jays fans with some optimism as they navigate a challenging season.
