The Toronto Blue Jays are entering another important series in the American League wild card race, and they also have a huge reinforcement working his way back toward the pitching staff.
Toronto sits at 72-72 after Sunday’s 6-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals, leaving the Blue Jays one-half game behind the Cleveland Guardians (73-72) for the final AL wild card spot. The loss snapped Toronto’s four-game winning streak, but the club has still gone 7-3 over its last 10 games and has 18 games remaining to make its push.
As the Blue Jays prepared to open their series against the Athletics on Monday, Trey Yesavage’s recovery reached another checkpoint.

According to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling, the right-hander threw a 34-pitch bullpen session in Dunedin, Florida, and the next test is already scheduled for Thursday, when he is expected to face live hitters for two innings.
That progression gives Toronto a much clearer idea of whether Yesavage can build enough in the coming weeks to help the club during its playoff push.
The 23-year-old has been sidelined since August after undergoing surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee. Before the injury, Yesavage had established himself as an important part of Toronto’s rotation, going 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 91 strikeouts across 93 2/3 innings in 18 starts.
Yesavage’s return timeline has become especially interesting because Toronto does not have much time to get him fully stretched out. Manager John Schneider previously said the rookie would need at least one rehab game before returning, meaning Thursday’s live-hitter session is another step toward determining how quickly he can progress.
His first bullpen since surgery came Friday, when he threw 23 pitches, reached 92 mph and told Schneider he felt great. The follow-up session Monday went according to plan, putting Yesavage in position for his most meaningful test yet later this week.
With Toronto fighting Cleveland and the Texas Rangers for the final postseason spot, a healthy Yesavage could give the Blue Jays another starting option at precisely the time they need one most.
