The Toronto Blue Jays have been dealing with injuries to most of their core players early in the 2026 MLB season, and the latest player to hit the injured list was unfortunately designated hitter George Springer.

The 36-year-old veteran suffered a fractured left big toe this past weekend during a series against the Minnesota Twins and has since been placed on the 10-day injured list.

Springer had struggled to open the season, posting a .185 batting average, .290 on-base percentage, .661 OPS, two home runs and six RBIs across 14 games, yet his track record still suggests he can be an elite player.

After all, in 2025 Springer finished seventh in American League MVP voting and took home his third career Silver Slugger Award.

The latest update from Keegan Matheson of MLB.com on Springer suggests that he hopes his stay on the IL is for the minimum despite the fractured toe, and that he potentially would have tried to play through it if Toronto were fighting for playoff positioning.

Instead, the organization does not want him to push through the injury. While that is positive, the problem is that Springer is on the IL and Toronto has lost another position player, costing them more roster flexibility.

The Blue Jays called up Eloy Jimenez to slot in as the designated hitter, but Jimenez does not have the ability to play the outfield. He plays first base, which is where superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. plays every day, so Jimenez will not be taking reps elsewhere. That lack of versatility forced Toronto to act quickly to regain some balance.

On Monday, the Blue Jays announced that they had acquired Lenyn Sosa in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. “OFFICIAL: We’ve acquired INF Lenyn Sosa from the White Sox in exchange for Minor League OF Jordan Rich and a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room, RHP Shane Bieber has been transferred to the 60-day IL,” the team wrote on X.

Sosa has the ability to play every position on the infield and will help cover the absence of Addison Barger, who is also on the injured list.

This move will likely allow Toronto to shift Ernie Clement back into the outfield full-time rather than relying on him at third base. Sosa is off to a rough start in 2026, but last year he showed flashes of being a solid MLB hitter.

The 26-year-old posted a .264 batting average, .292 on-base percentage and .727 OPS, all of which were career-highs over 140 games.

Sosa is out of options, so he must remain on the active roster, and when Springer and Barger return it remains unclear who the odd man out will be. For a team already stretched thin, Toronto simply needs Sosa to stabilize things until their lineup gets closer to full strength.
