The Toronto Blue Jays were among the most active sellers at Monday’s MLB trade deadline. Kevin Gausman was the first major departure, going to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night, while Daulton Varsho was dealt to the Houston Astros on deadline day in exchange for right-hander Spencer Arrighetti. Toronto also acquired José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels as part of its retooling effort.
One notable veteran, however, remained in place. Despite weeks of trade speculation, George Springer was not moved before the deadline. The 36-year-old held full control over his future through his 10-and-5 rights, meaning any potential deal would have required his approval.

Springer made his stance clear about his desire to remain in Toronto before the deadline.
“I’m here. I love this team. I love this organization, and as far as I know, I’m here,” he told reporters on Saturday.
After the deadline, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins revealed that Springer was not moved because the club wants him to stay in Toronto (via Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet).
The 2017 World Series MVP is under contract through 2027 under the six-year, $150 million deal he signed before the 2021 season. He is batting .239/.320/.411 with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and 39 runs scored this season. Injuries interrupted much of his first half, including a fractured left toe in April and a right quad strain in May.
His production picked up in July. Springer hit .290 with four home runs, 13 RBIs and an .878 OPS. Over his final 15 games before the deadline, he batted .333 with three home runs and 14 RBIs, giving the Blue Jays reason to believe he can continue that form over the final two months of the season.
