Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios has had a very productive career in Major League Baseball. Through 10 years in the majors, Berrios has made 275 appearances, pitching to a 4.08 ERA in 1,571 2/3 innings, striking out 1,481 batters with 473 walks.

He has been to a pair of All-Star Games and won an American League Gold Glove Award in 2023. The 2026 season will be Berrios' fifth year of the seven-year, $131 million contract extension he signed with the Blue Jays.

After being selected 32nd overall in the 2012 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins, Berrios spent over five years in the majors with them. He was traded from Minnesota to Toronto at the trade deadline in 2021 and has been with the organization since.

In 2025, Berrios had a solid year in the Blue Jays' starting rotation. In 31 appearances with 30 starts, he had a 4.17 ERA, as he struck out 138 batters and walked 56 in 166 innings. At the end of the regular season, Berrios dealt with elbow inflammation in his right arm, keeping him out of Toronto's postseason run to an American League pennant.

This spring training, Berrios made three starts, tossing 10 2/3 innings with a 3.38 ERA. However, on March 18, MLB.com's Keegan Matheson reported that Berrios had a stress fracture in his elbow, which will put him on the injured list to begin the 2026 regular season.

On Thursday, Matheson gave an update on the status of Berrios after hearing Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins speak to the media.

"José Berríos also expected to begin throwing off a mound again this week, too," he wrote.

On Wednesday, the Blue Jays placed Berrios, along with starting pitchers Trey Yesavage and Shane Bieber, on the 15-day IL. This means Toronto will begin the season without three of its starting options on the shelf.

The Blue Jays' opening day will be on Friday against the Athletics at Rogers Centre in Toronto. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET.
