Blake Treinen’s return to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ bullpen has ended abruptly after the veteran reliever suffered a right shoulder injury while warming up Saturday against the San Francisco Giants.
Treinen was preparing to enter the game when he felt something in his shoulder after a warmup pitch. He immediately stopped throwing and was helped back toward the clubhouse with a trainer.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters afterward that Treinen’s season is over, although the team was still waiting on imaging to determine the extent of the injury.
The timing is particularly difficult for the 38-year-old right-hander. Treinen had only recently returned from a lengthy absence caused by right elbow inflammation and was activated from the 60-day injured list on Sept. 2.
Treinen had made 36 appearances before his latest injury, going 4-1 with a 3.64 ERA for the Dodgers. He also owns extensive postseason experience, including a major role during Los Angeles’ 2024 World Series championship run.
The veteran reliever’s absence leaves another hole in a Dodgers bullpen that has dealt with several injuries throughout the season. Los Angeles has already spent much of 2026 managing pitching health, including previous absences for Treinen, Roki Sasaki and others.

Treinen’s latest setback also comes after he worked his way back from the elbow issue through seven minor league rehab appearances. He allowed no runs and struck out eight across 6⅓ innings during that rehab assignment before returning to Los Angeles.
Now, the Dodgers will have to move forward without one of their most experienced relievers. Further imaging should provide more information about the shoulder injury, but Roberts’ initial assessment already points to Treinen missing the postseason.
