Immediately after No. 6 seed North Carolina blew its first-round game against No. 11 seed VCU, most fans assumed Hubert Davis would be fired. That being said, he's still the head coach in Chapel Hill.
Matt Norlander of CBS Sports reported on Saturday that Davis’ future at North Carolina was in doubt. He said it'd be a surprise if Davis was allowed to stay on for a sixth season with the Tar Heels.
As of this Tuesday afternoon, however, Davis remains the head coach at North Carolina. According to college basketball insider Seth Davis, the school's administration asked Hubert Davis if he'd like to retain his job. Obviously, he said yes.
Seth Davis ultimately believes the Tar Heels will have to make a coaching change this offseason in order to avoid starting the 2026-27 season with a really awkward situation.
"Not sure I've seen many situations like the one that is happening at North Carolina regarding Hubert Davis," Davis said. "My understanding is the administration asked Hubert if he wants to continue, and he said emphatically yes. To let it go on for this long with no decision is not fair to anyone. At this point it would be very very difficult to bring him back. He would enter next season under a huge cloud. Usually the best strategy in this situation is to rip the Band-Aid off and make a decision one way or the other. To let it linger for this long is unnecessary and healthy. Here's hoping we get a decision on this one way or another very very soon."

What's the buyout for Hubert Davis?
North Carolina has Davis under contract through June 30, 2030. According to USA Today, he'd be owed $5.312 million if he's fired on April 1.
CBS Sports previously reported that “key boosters” at North Carolina believe they could cut ties with Davis and still land a worthy replacement
Alabama's Nate Oats, Florida's Todd Golden and Iowa State's TJ Otzelberger have been mentioned as options for North Carolina. Of course, that's if the school fires Davis.
