Buzz Williams had a tough first season as head coach of the Maryland Terrapins. Williams was hired after the former Terrapins head coach, Kevin Willard, left for the Villanova Wildcats in 2025. Willard went 65-39 in his three seasons with Maryland, including a Sweet 16 tournament run in 2024-25.

Maryland finished 12-21, posting the second-worst record in the Big Ten (4-16), with only the Penn State Nittany Lions finishing worse. Senior Pharrel Paine played in only 10 games due to injury, but the 6-foot-9 forward led the Terrapins in scoring when he did play (17.5 points per game), with senior guard David Coit (13.5) second.

With their leading scorers graduating, if Maryland is to improve for the 2026-27 men's college basketball season, it will need help from the NCAA men's transfer portal. Terrapins Insider for 247Sports Jack Sheehan has logged a prediction that Wagner will transfer to the Terrapins. The 6-foot-4 guard spent two years in Fayetteville before entering the 2026 NCAA men's transfer portal.

D.J. Wagner is a former No. 1 overall recruit who originally chose to play for John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats out of Camden High School. After playing his freshman season in Lexington, he decided to follow Calipari to the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Wagner played in 35 games for Arkansas last season, averaging 23.6 minutes per game. Alongside star freshman guard Darius Acuff Jr. last season, he averaged 7.4 points per game, 2.4 assists, and 1.6 rebounds.

"Former No. 1 overall recruit D.J. Wagner has received a Crystal Ball prediction to commit to Maryland," independent journalist Ross Spitzer wrote on X. "Step in the right direction for Buzz Williams, who needs to get back on track after a disappointing year last year. Would be a nice pickup for the Terrapins."

Wagner would have until the April 21, when the transfer portal window closes, to choose a new school.
