Kyler Gordon made an immediate impact in his return to the Chicago Bears, recording three sacks and forcing two fumbles in Sunday’s 31-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The nickel cornerback delivered a historic performance in his first appearance of the 2026 season after spending months recovering from a calf injury.
Gordon’s three sacks marked the first time a Bears player recorded that many in a game since Robert Quinn accomplished the feat in 2021. He also became the first Chicago defensive back to record three sacks in a game since Todd Bell did so on Oct. 2, 1983.
According to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic, Gordon’s performance ended a 43-year wait for a Bears defensive back to reach that mark.
The performance was particularly notable given Gordon’s injury history. He missed the entire offseason program and training camp while recovering from a right calf injury, beginning the season on the physically unable to perform list. Chicago activated him on Saturday, Oct. 17, one day before its matchup with Atlanta.
The Bears had reason to be cautious with Gordon after his extended absence. However, he made the most of his limited playing time, registering three sacks and two forced fumbles in his season debut. His final sack proved especially important as Atlanta attempted to complete a late comeback.

Chicago had built a 31-7 lead before the Falcons scored twice in the fourth quarter, cutting the margin to eight points. With Atlanta threatening to make it a one-score game late, Gordon sacked quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and forced a fumble that linebacker Devin Bush recovered.
The turnover helped preserve the victory and gave Gordon a memorable return. The Bears improved to 4-2 with the win, keeping themselves in the NFC North race alongside the Green Bay Packers, who also entered the week with a 4-2 record.
Gordon’s performance also came at a time when Chicago was managing another defensive setback. The team placed defensive lineman Dayo Odeyingbo on injured reserve before the game, making Gordon’s return a welcome addition to the defense.
The Bears will host the New England Patriots on Thursday, Oct. 22. After his historic season debut, Gordon gives Chicago another defensive playmaker as the team looks to build on its latest win.
