Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield drew a strong message of support from his wife, Emily Mayfield, after his thumb injury.
The Buccaneers’ Week 3 comeback against the Minnesota Vikings fell short on Sunday. The Vikings ultimately held on to secure a 23-16 road win.
But the biggest story of the game was Mayfield’s injury. The incident came on fourth-and-13 with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter. Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman made contact with Mayfield’s hand during a pass attempt, which was intercepted by OLB Andrew Van Ginkel.
Mayfield immediately went down in pain and walked off the field holding his right hand. Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles later announced that Mayfield will miss at least three weeks after dislocating his thumb.
This unfortunate news drew a strong message from Emily Mayfield, who showed her support for her husband via an Instagram story.
“So proud of my guy. Never stops grinding. And leaves it all out there every single week. Absolutely hate seeing him hurt, but if anyone will bounce back, it’s Bake. ♥️,” Emily wrote.
Mayfield’s injury ends the 31-year-old’s streak of 57 consecutive starts across the regular season and playoffs, dating back to his arrival in Tampa Bay in 2023.
Before leaving Sunday’s game, Mayfield completed 17-of-34 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Jalon Daniels, who went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, will start in Mayfield’s place in their next game.
Mayfield and Tampa Bay remain winless at 0-3 this season. They will look to score their first victory in Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in front of their home fans at Raymond James Stadium.
