Egypt defeated Australia on July 3 in a tightly contested Round of 32 match at the 2026 World Cup, advancing on penalties after the two sides played to a 1-1 draw through extra time.
Australia nearly snatched the win later in the match, but goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a brilliant fingertip save to deny Egypt a dramatic late winner.
With the victory, Egypt advances to the Round of 16 in Atlanta, where it will face the winner of the Argentina vs. Cape Verde matchup.
In a bold tactical move, Australia head coach Tony Popovic substituted Beach for veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan moments before the penalty shootout.
The gamble did not pay off as Australia fell behind immediately after captain Henry Souttar shot the opening penalty over the crossbar.
Egypt forward Mohamed Salah then outsmarted Ryan, sending the goalkeeper diving to his left before calmly slotting his penalty down the middle to give Egypt a 3-2 lead in the shootout.
Hossam Abdelmaguid sealed the victory by calmly scoring the decisive penalty into the bottom-left corner.
